“Have We Reached the End of the Bretton Woods Moment? Global Governance With and Without the United States”

Debates surrounding the liberal international order are often poorly framed and focused exclusively on U.S. anxieties. In this presentation, I discuss three possible meanings for an end to the Bretton Woods moment: the end of an order defined by liberal norms; an end to the dominant position of the U.S. and its allies in defining and maintaining global order; and the relative decline of multilateral institutions as constituents of global governance. Each of these meanings highlights different paths for reconstituting global governance.
